Why is Ohio State football's black stripe tradition so important? Here's what Ryan Day, Urban Meyer and players had to say.
Ohio State football's black stripe tradition started with Urban Meyer and has been carried on by coach Ryan Day.
Losing a black stripe means a newcomer has earned the right to play at OSU. Noland, officially, became a Buckeye. “When you get recruited, that doesn’t make you a Buckeye,” Meyer said. “When you go through the weight room, that doesn’t make you a Buckeye. What makes you a Buckeye is when you adhere to the culture, add to the culture. How do you do that? You do everything right.”
But for him, even as the 16th member of his freshman class to lose the black stripe, it remains a core memory.
