Volpe was supposed to hide out in the No. 9 spot in the batting order. No one was supposed to notice a low .200 average as he rode shogun all the way to October.The Yankees are just a game over .500, struggling to stay out of last place. Other thanmasterpieces, nothing has gone right in the Bronx. It’ll be up to Hal Steinbrenner to decide who’ll pay the price. Boone may or may not be dismissed.
The Yankees say no. They believe Volpe has thick psychological flesh. He’ll learn from the season-long slump instead of being scarred by it. The acceptance of responsibility is one of the reasons the Yankees believe in Volpe’s future. He’s not an excuse maker. He obviously cares. And no one in Pinstripes plays harder.
Still, obsession doesn’t come without a cost. Volpe is so consumed with succeeding that he’s lost two important components of his game: waiting patiently for hittable strikes, which has tanked his on-base percentage. And over-aggression in his swing.
