“Supercell” is used by meteorologists to describe a type of long-lasting storm that contains updrafts which rotate around a vertical axis. These storms are accompanied by dangerous weather conditions, which can include large hail, damaging winds, and sometimes, tornadoes. Classic supercells appear as individual storms, but they can sometimes be embedded within a line or cluster of thunderstorms. When viewed in an open area , classic supercells have a distinctive “mothership appearance.”Supercells are easy to spot on Doppler radar, which often shows what meteorologists call a “hook echo” on the lower-left portion of a storm. The hook echo extends southward from the main core of the thunderstorm .
