Fellow Dallasites, we are not trained in lament. We live in a beautiful city, with beautiful people, and like the fleeting spring blossoms, we are always seeking to move forward, to start something new, to whitewash the darkness and brokenness of the past by putting our best foot forward for the future.

Palm Sunday represents a similar crossroads. The king of the Jews entered his city to thunderous applause, but all the while, he knew he was marching to his death. By Thursday evening of that week, all of his friends would abandon him as he was arrested, they would scatter, and the king would be subject to mockery, abuse at the hands of authorities, and ultimately to death. He knew this was coming, and he went anyway.
