Our Constitution was never intended to be so ironclad that it could not be “amended” for the modern world.

The 18th amendment was added to the constitution and enforced beginning Jan. 17, 1920 to prohibit the sale, production and transport of alcohol. It was added to the constitution in reaction to what was considered immoral behavior. The 21st amendment repealed the 18th amendment when it became clear it created more problems than it solved.

Amendments can always be reevaluated. Even the first amendment is not beyond consideration. What does “free” speech mean? What responsibility do citizens have in what we say or write? We cannot slander someone. We cannot scream “fire” in a crowded theater or print outright lies that ruin another person’s reputation.

The second amendment is no different. It deserves an intelligent conversation. Should anyone outside of the military own a weapon never intended for private use?If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
