On July 31, my wife and I arrived in Maui excited to have nine nights in paradise. The sightseeing, exploring, sunset cruise, Road to Hana, beach strolls, great meals and nightly sunset viewing lasted for seven nights. Then the wildfires exploded. High winds and smoky skies took charge. Power, cell service, Wi-Fi and food were scarce.
Hearing on the car radio that the fire near Lahaina was 100% contained, we made the decision to quickly pack our bags and drive from Kaanapali to the airport in Kahului with hopes of returning home on August 9. While driving, we were met with detour after detour. We drove 10 miles in four hours due to the traffic and detours. Downed electrical lines were blocking roads. After the detour that aimed us back to our original accommodation, we gave up and returned to it.
