Alex Morgan among those with national team, but San Diego beats Washington Spirit 2-1

That was the story at Torero Stadium on Sunday afternoon as San Diego Wave FC rode stellar defense and goals from Makenzy Doniak and Isabelle Briede to a comfortable 2-1 victory over the Washington Spirit.

Morgan leads the Wave and the entire NWSL with 11 goals and her speed and playmaking were expected to leave a huge hole, but the lineup was bolstered by the return of defender Abby Dahlkemper, who has appeared in just two games this season while dealing with rib injuries as well as illness. Briede made it 2-0 San Diego just before halftime when she finished off a fast break by slipping a shot past Kerr into the right corner off a slick pass from Marleen Schimmer for her first goal of the season.
