Like a rainfall of ideas collecting in a bucket (or more appropriately, a rain barrel), the Watershed Stewardship Center became a reality a decade ago.

Located in the West Creek Reservation, the facility is the Cleveland Metroparks’ first dedicated venue to scientific research and promoting sustainable action through science-based programs where teachers, students, professionals and the public learn about replicable stormwater management methods.

The public is invited to participate in a hike detailing the trails’ unique features followed by a viewing of a mini-documentary about the center. The center is a collaboration between the Cleveland Metroparks, West Creek Conservancy, Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District and the city of Parma. NEORSD Director of Administration and External Affairs Jeannie Smith said when the concept of the Stewardship Center was first presented the Sewer District Board showed its enthusiasm by approving funds to see it come to fruition.

“We’re very proud to have the Metroparks and Watershed Stewardship Center in Parma,” he said. “I was in attendance for the grand opening and also recently for the 10th anniversary. What was inside blew her mind as it related to the organization’s efforts today, as well as the Watershed Stewardship Center.

Thinking about the authors of the 106-year-old annual report, Grieser surmised they would be delighted to know their foresight to preserve important spaces led directly to the creation of healthy waterways within the Cleveland Metroparks.
