CNN’s Don Lemon asked “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett’s lawyer Patricia Brown Holmes about suspicions of political interference in the case after all charges against her client were dropped.
Empire star Jussie Smollett's lawyer has denied there was any political influence in the prosecutor’s decision to drop charges against her client. Smollett was accused of filing a false police report over an alleged racist attack that investigators say he manufactured.
"Did someone potentially very important or influential do a favor, make a call on Jussie's behalf?" CNN's Don Lemon asked Smollett’s lawyer Patricia Brown Holmes on Tuesday night after prosecutors dropped the charges in exchange for community service and a forfeited bond. Smollett, 36, claimed he was attacked in January by two men who sprayed a bleach over him, put a noose around his neck, and told him “this is MAGA country, n****r” a reference to President Donald Trump’s “make America great again” campaign slogan.
Prosecutors also said their office stands behind the Chicago Police Department’s investigation and dropping the charges does not mean there were problems with the case. The Democrat also decried what he called the"ethical cost" of the incident because victims of hate crime who come forward will now be doubted."He did this all in the name of self-promotion...This is a whitewash of justice," Emanuel said.
