Perhaps hints of humidity in the air made the sunlight seem a bit diffuse, devoid of the fierce intensity that might yield such unusual warmth. So it appeared possible that the arrival from elsewhere of a shipment of atypically warm air made the difference. The District registered 82 degrees, 17 above the Oct. 27 average. It failed by a single degree to tie the city’s record for the date, 83, set 6o years ago.At Baltimore-Washington International Marshall Airport, a record was matched. The 82-degree high equaled the Oct. 27 record for the date, set, as at the other airports, on a warm day in 1963.Clearly, however, mid-September had not staged an atmospheric coup, or overthrown all seasonal order.
For when the late-afternoon sun managed to make its presence known, it could be seen as autumnal. It created an expansive October glow, its rays filtering through branches bedecked with leaves in autumn yellows, reds and golds.But autumn, warm or cool, bright or brooding, inexorably compresses the hours allotted to daylight.
