Wanted was a supervillain origin story.
Mark Millar's comic book series Wanted, which debuted twenty years ago, concluded with its main character Wesley Gibson embracing his role as a member of the "Fraternity of Super-Criminals." Now, Millar's Big Game miniseries serves as a direct sequel to Wanted, and in its opening pages, makes it very clear that Wesley is the villain.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The ending of Wanted has often been misunderstood by readers. It relies in an inverted comic book morality, with Wesley dedicating himself in the final pages to upholding the status quo enforced by the "Super-Criminals" – speaking directly to the reader, Wesley acknowledges that all the ills of the world are directed by those in power, and that he is now one of those in power.
In the world of Wanted, superheroes were exterminated by the Fraternity of Super-Criminals, who direct the suffering of the world populace for their own enrichment and empowerment. Rather than reject their evil control, protagnost Wesley Gibson jojns the Fraternity.
Wesley Gibson, as depicted in the first issue of Big Game, is unrepentently the bad guy. He is committed to keeping superheroes from returning to help average people, to maintaining the status quo that benefits only him and a select group of villains. Mark Millar has taken the opportunity to make this unambiguously clear from the opening pages of Big Game #1, as some readers of Wanted over the years have not grasped the full implications of the book's final moments.
As Wanted closes, Wesley – who has narrated the series – indicts the reader for passively accepting the horrors of the modern world, making it clear that Wanted is meant to be set in the reader's world. In Big Game, decades have passed, and the character has long profited from his position as one of Earth's "secret masters.
