A motorcycle escort accompanied The Wall That Heals exhibit Wednesday morning as it drove into Randall Oaks Park in West Dundee. The replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was brought to town by the Carpentersville/Dundee American Legion Post 679 and True Patriots Care and will be on display through Memorial Day weekend. The exhibit — three quarters the size of the original, standing 7.5 feet high and 375 feet long — was erected Wednesday on a field across from True Patriots’ annual Memorial Day flag display. Carpentersville/Dundee American Legion Post 679 and True Patriots Care are the event sponsors and will hold an opening ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 24.
Don Wendling helped in the effort because a friend, Rand Kanden, recruited him. A Vietnam veteran, Wendling took the opportunity to talk with other vets about their experiences in the war while they were working, he said.Kanden, who was on hand when the memorial last came to Randall Oaks Park in 2019, said he was honored to be able help and to see the finished product, which he described as “profound.
