The Vivo X100 Pro features great photography and a terrific processor from MediaTek, but its software and overall user experience don't meet the same high standard.
The U.S. smartphone market continues to be effectively a duopoly of Apple and Samsung, while competitive devices from China-based OEMs such as Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi remain unavailable to North American consumers. The Vivo X100 Pro is in many ways a great demonstration of the differences between the U.S. smartphone market and the global market. One of the standout aspects of the X100 Pro is that it features MediaTek’s flagship Dimensity 9300 chip inside, which I have eagerly awaited to test.
That aside, shooting with the X100 Pro using the Zeiss color profile and lens simulations for portrait shots was one of the most enjoyable photography experiences I’ve had in a long time. I also found the telephoto to be the best among the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, S24 Ultra, Google Pixel 8 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The biggest letdown with the X100 Pro was that the video modes felt significantly more limited than the photography and there were no video capabilities beyond 4.3x optical mode.
