A puppet re-creation of Vanessa Carlton's 'A Thousand Miles' music video featuring San Francisco landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge went viral.
). In just one day, the video has racked up 17,000 views at the time of publication.
The video was created by 34-year-old aerospace engineer Ben Howard, who lives in the Mission, with help from his high school friend Noah Klugman and Lane Powell . The project began two years ago, after Howard acquired a decommissioned food delivery robot and used it to distribute Halloween candy in a contactless, pandemic-safe manner. He wanted to turn the project into something that he could take out into the city year-round, and the idea of a robotic piano player came to mind.
“I learned to play her song on piano as a kid, along with a zillion other people. Her old music is just classic, and she’s still putting out new great music,” Howard toldThe robotic puppet and custom piano were created at an industrial workshop in Hunter’s Point called The Box Shop. To achieve the uncanny lip-syncing effect, Howard filmed himself singing and then motion-mapped the robot’s movements to the footage.
Filming took place in late March and April throughout San Francisco, and it was done almost entirely with an iPhone, except for the nighttime shots. Spectators couldn’t get enough of Vanessa.
