The plane, which left OSU's airport in Columbus on Friday, crashed near I-75 Southbound near Naples around 3:15. During the flight, the pilot indicated having lost both engines on the plane, though it is not clear whether they were physically lost or just stopped working. The plane was less than five miles from the runway when it crashed near the highway, and two of the five people on board were killed.The victims were identified by the Collier County Sheriff's Office as the plane's pilot, 50-year-old Edward Daniel Murphy, and the second-in-command, 65-year-old Ian Frederick Hofmann.
Three others onboard, including two passengers from Columbus, were hospitalized for their injuries: 35-year-old Aaron Baker and 23-year-old Audra Green of Columbus, Ohio were passengers on the flight, and 23-year-old Sydney Ann Bosmans of Florida was a crew member.The family is in shock and devastated but want to express our thanks for the heartfelt support we have received. We know our father died a hero doing his best to save everyone he could on the plane.
I can tell you, it's highly unusual to lose both engines at one time," he said. "Was it a contaminated fuel? Was it a bad switch that made the engines go off? Was is something the pilots did or didn't do?"
