Vice staffers fear salary and severance payments could be impacted as the company moves closer to bankruptcy
Some of the people who were recently terminated have been messaging one another trying to figure out how to protect their interests as the company is expected to enter a chapter 11 bankruptcy, which would wipe out Vice's debts. Some laid-off staff have been promised four more paychecks for eight more weeks of work. The Writers Guild of America East, which represents the Vice Union, is involved in conversations about how staff will be protected and paid for their work.
The WGAE told Insider in a statement:"The Union is monitoring the situation closely, and in the meantime is ensuring that the CBA is enforced, and members are receiving everything owed under the contract. In the event of a bankruptcy, the Union will continue to zealously advocate for members and will be a creditor in bankruptcy court if the company ceases to meet its contractual obligations." over pay and practices for TV writers.
A second Vice insider said:"Hundreds of people lose their jobs and Shane gets his back? The main concern is, what the hell does the bankruptcy mean?" This person added,"If they file and then sell, do we forfeit severance?" Separately, some staff have taken to Twitter to share support for Vice's news operations, which won eight news Emmy awards last year under EVP Subrata De, the company's global head of programming and documentary., who embedded with the Taliban ahead of the fall of Afghanistan, tweeted on Friday:"I joined Vice in 2016 after begging other news orgs I'd worked for to let me report on international news. Within a month I was on a flight to Iraq."a note to her colleagues.
