UTSA is launching a new course, Academic Introduction and Strategies (AIS), designed specifically for veterans transitioning to civilian life. The course will provide a supportive environment and resources to help veterans succeed academically and connect with peers.

UTSA is taking steps to support veterans transitioning to civilian life by offering a new course specifically designed for them. Starting this semester, veterans enrolled at the university will have access to Academic Introduction and Strategies (AIS). The course aims to help veterans acclimate to the academic environment and connect with other students. Brian Rendell, a retired 24-year Air Force colonel and instructor for the AIS course, emphasized the importance of this initiative.

'Veteran students often find themselves in a different stage of life, which can make it difficult to connect with peers who are just beginning their college journey,' Rendell explained. 'We’re always trying to find ways to increase student success. In this case, our goal is to ensure that veterans feel even more connected to the university and have the resources to succeed academically.'Formerly required for all first-time freshmen with fewer than 30 credit hours, the AIS veterans course will now provide a supportive and unique environment tailored to the needs of former service members. It is a key component of the university's 'First-Year Experience' initiative, which is designed to help all students adjust to the challenges of college life.
