Texas House candidate Kristian Carranza ’s story about adopting her mother’s surname a decade before legally changing it is not an uncommon one. Using a mother’s surname is not unusual for children, especially adult children, who grew up in single-parent homes led by women and in Mexican American homes like Carranza’s. In such households, mothers are often both father and mother. They’re everything else, too, often working several jobs to keep bills paid and children in school.

They were Carranza’s parents while growing up on the city’s South Side, where the Democrat is running against incumbent Republican John Lujan for District 118 in the Texas House of Representatives. Carranza’s father may have been around when her brother was born a year before her, but he was mostly absent by the time she arrived.
