Gary Woodland holds off Brooks Koepka to win 119th U.S. Open for first career major championship
USA TODAY SportsWith Brooks Koepka on his heels throughout Sunday's final round, Gary Woodland kept his composure under pressure to win the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links by three shots.
Woodland bogeyed the 12th hole to drop back to 11 under, just one shot ahead of Koepka. Then he got into trouble with his tee shot on the par-4 13th missing right, but got up and down beautifully. Koepka kept charging but Woodland's birdie on 14 to move the lead back to two shots proved too much to overcome. Woodland finished with a flourish, sealing the championship with a long birdie on 18 to finish at 13 under. Koepka finished 10 under.
Former U.S. Open champion Justin Rose, who trailed Woodland by one shot entering play Sunday, bogeyed the 12th, 13th and 15th to finish in a tie for third at 7 under.Koepka was seeking a spot in the history books, looking to join Willie Anderson as the only players to win three consecutive U.S. Open championships. The 29-year-old won the PGA Championship last month at Bethpage Black, giving him back-to-back titles in that major.
This U.S. Open victory marked Woodland's first major championship.
