Unlike AI chatbots, students are insatiably hungry to learn | Opinion

Learning requires wonderment, and advanced machines like ChatGPT are just programmed by clever humans.Chad EngellandAt one of my family’s favorite surf spots in San Diego, I once spotted an old van. On its windshield, written into the accumulated dirt and dust, were the words, “Tow me. I am abandoned.”

First, imitation is not duplication, appearance is not reality. The talking van appears to talk but in fact does not. The chatbot appears to understand but in fact does not. Instead it is programmed by clever humans to say the sorts of things that humans typically say. If it sounds uncannily like a human, it is because it echoes what humans have said and thought before.

I always begin class the day a paper is due by asking: “What discoveries did you make?” And there is always a lively discussion. At some point during the writing process, a light went off, connections were made, learning took place.
