As we shine a light on Child Abuse Prevention Month this April, Child Advocates San Antonio underscores the critical need for advocates for children in Bexar County. Last year, more than 4,600 children in Bexar County endured abuse or neglect, resulting in 15 tragic deaths. When severe abuse and neglect are reported, children are removed from their homes and placed in temporary foster care or with relatives while their cases undergo investigation and review by the court.
CASA plays a crucial role in supporting vulnerable children by recruiting and providing a “Court Appointed Special Advocate,” a volunteer who supports children experiencing foster care. Currently, over 2,000 children in Bexar County are in need of an advocate.“If you see something, say something.” Factors such as stress, substance abuse, and poverty contribute to these alarming statistics, underscoring the need for the community to recognize signs of abuse and support families in need.
