Ukrainian women and children are being increasingly exposed to rape, sexual exploitation, and human trafficking as the struggle to flee the war-torn country becomes more desperate, a United Nations director said Monday.

"We are increasingly hearing of rape and sexual violence, and these allegations must be independently investigated to ensure justice and accountability," Sima Sami Bahous, the executive director of U.N. Women told the United Nations Security Council."The combination of mass displacement with a large presence of conscripts and mercenaries and the brutality displayed against Ukrainian civilians has raised all red flags.

Russian forces invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24. Since then, thousands of civilians have lost their lives, 4.1 million have fled their homes, and towns have been bombed into oblivion. "A number of facts and cases [have been] already reported, but, unfortunately, this is just the tip of the iceberg," Cherepakha said.Manuel Fontaine, director of UNICEF's Office of Emergency Program, told the global group that he has"never seen so much damage caused in so little time" and that"children and families in communities are under attack."
