Yuliya Cadrain had never planned on being a traveller.
Cadrain still has family there, including some living in the hardest-hit areas. Her brother isn’t able to leave Ukraine, but his girlfriend and their son have left to stay in Georgia.
The Canada-Saskatchewan Immigration Agreement in 2005 encouraged local businesses, especially in the manufacturing sector, to bring in migrant workers directly to Saskatchewan, and yet immigration services were non-existent in rural communities at that time. Humboldt’s newcomer centre wasn’t established until 2009.Article content
Cadrain worked at a local radio station in Ukraine, and always had a love of language. But in Canada, it was nearly impossible to communicate effectively. Volunteers spent time with her helping her practise English before structured language classes were offered through Carlton Trail College, employment help was offered through Humboldt and District Community Services, and she was invited to volunteer at the Reid-Thompson Public Library where she was surrounded by English books and native speakers.
Hearing the stories coming out of Ukraine, Cadrain said it is hard to witness what they’ve been through as she has always been an empathetic person. However, when things get really bad, she has a great boss and co-workers to lean on and encourage her to take time away from it all, she said. People have jumped at the chance to help out and Cadrain sees the response firsthand, especially when the newcomer team posts about what they need on social media.“Some of the people were shocked how much Canadians are helping, how much they’re involved,” she said. “In our country, it’s really rare when somebody brings you a couch for free.
