Roman Vashchuk stood in a Kraken sweater on a warm Independence Day, looking like any other fan on a stage in Kirkland.
“This has been a blessing,” said his wife Roza, who stood just off-stage at the Celebrate Kirkland festival with their three young children.
Roza and their three kids, then aged 10, 7, and 2, were stuck. They escaped to a Polish refugee camp and somehow got on a plane to the United States. They were welcomed by the “United for Ukraine” program, which allowed an unlimited number of Ukrainians to come to America with temporary protected status, with an American sponsor, live and work.
