Pedestrian fatalities are soaring in the U.S. and are expected to reach their highest level in 28 years

In the 10-year period from 2008 to 2017, the number of pedestrian fatalities increased by 35% while the combined number of all other traffic deaths declined by 6%.
The report claims that many factors contribute to annual changes in pedestrian fatality figures with economic conditions, population growth, demographic changes, weather conditions and fuel prices all playing a role. Darkness is also a factor and in 2017, 75% of all pedestrian fatalities occurred at nighttime. The steady growth of pedestrian deaths in recent years might also be attributable to a shift in U.S.
