WASHINGTON - The U.S. Transportation Department said on Monday that a new blue ribbon commission will review how the Federal Aviation Administration certifies new aircraft after two Boeing 737 MAX jets crashed in recent months, killing nearly 350 people.
They are expected to ask the FAA about the program that allows companies to perform functions on the FAA’s behalf at a Senate hearing on Wednesday. The new panel will initially be co-chaired by retired Air Force General Darren McDew, the former head of the U.S. Transportation Command, and Lee Moak, a former president of the Air Line Pilots Association.
Acting FAA chief Dan Elwell, National Transportation Safety Board chairman Robert Sumwalt and Transportation Department inspector general Calvin Scovell will testify before the Senate Commerce Committee panel. They will be limited in what the can say about the recent crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia that killed 346 people as regulators in the country where they occurred are charged with disclosing details of their probes.
