U.S. tennis star Frances Tiafoe beat Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov in the semi-final of the U.S. Open late on Tuesday night to set up an all-American semi-final clash against Taylor Fritz and ensuring an American presence at a men’s Grand Slam final for the first time since 2009.Tiafoe was leading the quarter-final match 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, 4-1 when Dimitrov had to retire with a leg injury, granting the American the win.
The 20th seed Tiafoe reacted with a muted celebration and in his interview after the game said it was not the way he wanted to get through “but obviously happy to get through to another semi-final here.” Earlier in the evening, the 12th-seeded Fritz pulled off a major upset in his quarter-final game against the fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev, by beating the German star 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6.
