Texas guard Tyrese Hunter reacts after scoring against Kansas during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game in Austin, Texas, Saturday, March 4, 2023. AUSTIN – Texas is getting its point guard back.
After declaring for the 2023 NBA draft to weigh his pro options, Tyrese Hunter on Thursday announced he will withdraw his name and return to Texas for his junior season. The reveal came in a video posted to Hunter’s Instagram account with the caption “Aye…run that back.” The 6-foot guard and 2022 Big 12 freshman of the year, Hunter started all 38 games for the Longhorns last season after transferring in from Iowa State. He averaged 10.3 points, three rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 3s per game for a Texas team that won 29 games and reached the Elite Eight for the first time in 15 years.
Despite losing two five-star signees – A.J. Johnson will play in Australia’s pro league, and Ron Holland is still considering Texas among several other schools after decommitting – head coach Rodney Terry has put together a well-rounded roster this offseason by signing Abmas, Weaver, Virginia center Kadin Shedrick and UTEP forward Ze’Rik Onyema.
A team source said Terry and his staff will look to sign two or three more scholarship players while leaving the 13th slot open for flexibility. With Hunter’s return, Texas currently has nine scholarship players for its 2023-24 roster, which includes returning forwards Dylan Disu, Brock Cunningham and Alex Anamekwe and guard Gavin Perryman.
