“Definitely, a lot less infractions with technology,” Patel said since implementing the program last year.
That’s the motto of two Jersey City public schools that are piloting programs to remove the distractible devices from the classroom amid a growing national trend to limit screen time and boost student engagement. Now, the district superintendent hopes to expand the policies districtwide.
President Barack Obama Community School 34 and Academy 1 are already using two different methods in taking the cellphones out of the kid’s hands during the 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. school day. “We were encouraging more social interaction, especially since coming off the COVID-19 pandemic,” School 34 Principal Janeen Maniscalco said about beginning the program in 2023. “We had better buy in than we anticipated … of course, had grunts, groans and moans but they were pretty much in line.
Acting Principal Monica Patel said at Academy 1, located on Bergen Avenue, a swap for the cellphone for the Chromebook takes place during homeroom. Each Chromebook is numbered with the cellphone taking its place in a locked cart on wheels. The State Department of Education provides guidelines for schools developing cellphone policies informing schools to carefully consider the benefits and drawbacks.
School Board President DeJon Morris supports the idea of expanding the pilot program as “we have had so many different complaints from last school year about cyberbullying and cellphones not being used appropriately in school.”
