Comal County Animal Control said two feral cats have tested positive for rabies. They were found in different parts of the county.
Two feral cats have tested positive for rabies in Comal County , the latest in an increase in rabies cases in the Hill Country this year. The county said one cat was found near Texas 46 and FM 1863 , which is near the Oak Run neighborhood in New Braunfels . The other was found near Texas 46 and U.S. 281 , which is in Bulverde . Comal County Animal Control was notified about the positive tests on Sept. 6, the county said Monday.
Rabies is a viral disease that primarily affects the central nervous system, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The disease is fatal if medical care isn't received before symptoms start. More than 90% of reported rabies cases in the U.S. occur in wildlife, the CDC said; it's found most commonly in bats, raccoons, skunks and foxes. Comal County had four animals test positive in 2023 and six in 2022, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.
