This is the second successful birth of the species at the zoo in four years.

The zoo said the cubs were born at 3:53 a.m. and 4:16 a.m. to Kayla and Bhalu, a 10-year-old male.

Mom and cubs are doing well and the Zoo’s animal team continues to monitor their health via camera in their behind-the-scenes den. Kayla is showing great maternal behavior and has been in constant physical contact with the infants since birth,” the zoo said in a news release. The zoo said the cubs will be visible to the public in April “when mom decides it is time for them to venture out.”

According to the zoo, “Sloth bears are found in the lowland forests of India, Nepal and Sri Lanka and are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature with populations decreasing dramatically in recent decades due to habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict and poaching. They have flexible snouts with protruding upper and lower lips and powerful lungs that allow them to dislodge and eat termites and ants that are 8-10 feet underground.

Males can weigh up to between 175 pounds and 310 pounds. Females weigh between 120 pounds and 210 pounds. The gestation period is six to seven months.
