Last weekend, the New Art Dealers Alliance fair filled a building on Twenty-second Street, in Chelsea, with contemporary art, people hoping to sell or buy it, and those simply wanting to see and be seen. Also: some elementary schoolers hawking Country Time lemonade and art works made by fellow-kids, for a cause—specifically, the Children’s Museum of the Arts’ Emergency Arts Education Fund, which provides assistance to public schools whose budgets have been slashed.
Lucas, age nine, wearing a blue T-shirt with Andy Warhol on it, arrived first. He had a sculpture on view at the stand. “I made a little monster,” he said, gesturing to a marbled pink clay orb with green eyes. He set about mixing lemonade powder and water. A seven-year-old girl in a floral dress, named Emmanuelle, who was visiting the fair with her parents, joined Lucas behind the counter. The two drew with markers on paper cups that read “I ___ NY.”
