Sea turtles were exposed to heavy smoke, leaving one is distress.
West Orange police and firefighters were called to the Sea Turtle Recovery building at about 9:45 p.m where firefighters extinguished a blaze, a township spokesman said Thursday. No people were inside the building after the zoo closed at 4 p.m.
While the sea turtles in the building were exposed to heavy smoke, all were fine after the fire, Sea Turtle Recovery officials said in a statement on social media. The heart rate of one turtle — a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle named Pickles that was already battling a respiratory infection — dropped “dangerously low,” officials said. But, the animal was moved to an emergency pool to stimulate deeper breathing and his swimming soon became regular again.
The other turtles were also moved to a different building at the zoo before being brought to the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society in Hampton Bays, New York.“We can not begin to assess the damage, and we do not know at this time all of the filtration and tank damage that was done,” the Sea Turtle Recovery officials said.Sea Turtle Recovery is a separate nonprofit located inside Essex County zoo, according to the zoo website.
