Saskatoon Blades D\u002Dman Samuel Barick, a native of Slovakia, is getting used to a new country, Canada, and new country sounds,
“We listen to country music . We don’t really have that — so there’s a difference,” said Barcik, an 18-year-old native of Zvolen, Sovakia and one of eight newcomers on the Blades this season.“At first time, I was, like, ‘Ugh, I don’t like it,’ but it grows . Now, when I’m in bed at night, it’s kind of nice.”
The Blades see Barcik — who was selected in the first round, 56th overall, in the 2023 CHL Import Draft — as a nice addition to their 2023-24 roster. He’s the second European on the squad, joining Egor Sidorov from Belarus. “We knew we were getting a guy who had played with pros last year. He’s going to take some time to get adjusted to the small ice and how we play, but he’s extremely strong. He’s 190 pounds, chiselled and he’s very competitive. I think he’s going to be a huge addition this year.
“I think we have big chances to win the league,” said Barcik, a 6-foot-2, 188-pound D-man who is paired with veteran blueliner Charlie Wright.Saskatoon Blades defensemen Samuel Barcik hits the ice for WHL action against the Edmonton Oil Kings at SaskTel Centre on Wednesday, October 4, 2023.Barcik has yet to register a point through five games while he adjusts to the more physical North American game played on a smaller ice surface.

Navigating moiré physics and photonics with band offset tuningWhen two lattices with distinct angles or periodicities come together, they conjure a moiré superlattice—a realm where astonishing phenomena like superconductivity and optical solitons spring to life. At the heart of this realm lies the moiré flatband, a key player in shaping advanced light–matter interactions, such as laser emission and second harmonic generation. In moiré physics and its relevant applications, wielding control over flatbands is a pivotal superpower.
