National Weather Service officials warned of hazardous swimming conditions Tuesday due to high waves and dangerous currents at beaches along Lake Michigan in Illinois and Indiana.

Waves between 6 to 9 feet are expected along with dangerous currents making conditions life-threatening especially for inexperienced swimmers, officials said. Officials cautioned people to stay out of the water and not venture out onto piers or any shoreline structures.after going into the water about 2 a.m., officials said. The Winnetka Fire Department and Coast Guard were searching for the teen, but suspended the search Tuesday afternoon until Wednesday morning due to conditions of Lake Michigan, said Josie Clark, communications manager of Winnetka Village.

Weather officials also said Tuesday fog would be an issue in portions of north-central and northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana.Aug 15, 2023 at 11:39 am
