Despite President Joe Biden positioning himself as a centrist on abortion policy throughout the 2020 election, he has repeatedly embraced the most extreme Democratic Party line throughout his presidency. He has not just, which once banned taxpayer dollars from paying for abortions. By contrast, former President Donald Trump proudly has taken the centrist mantle on abortion policy and, thus, the winning electoral message from his 2024 opponent.
“My view is now that we have abortion where everybody wanted it from a legal standpoint. The states will determine by vote or legislation or perhaps both, and whatever they decide must be the law of the land — in this case, the law of the state,” Trump said. “Many states will be different. Many states will have a different number of weeks or some will have more conservative than others, and that’s what they will be. At the end of the day, it is all about the will of the people.
Just as Trump won 2016 by reframing Hillary Clinton’s candidacy as a referendum on the failure of Barack Obama’s presidency, Biden won 2020 by positioning himself as a centrist relative to Trump.
