Former President Donald Trump’s conviction on 34 felony counts for falsifying business records appears to be weighing on his standing with independent voters.
Former President Donald Trump appears at Manhattan criminal court during jury deliberations in his criminal hush money trial in New York, Thursday, May 30, 2024.
Views on whether the trial was fair and if Trump was guilty have mostly been split along partisan lines. In the Politico/Ipsos poll, half on independents said Trump was guilty and 46% said he received a fair trial.. If the trend continues, especially among independents, it could present a serious problem for Trump’s campaign to overcome by November.
“This election is between a convicted criminal who’s only out for himself and a president who’s fighting for your family,” a narrator says in the ad. The subject is also likely to come up in the June 27 debate in Atlanta when Trump and Biden square off in the first of two scheduled debates this year. The first debate, coming much earlier than in typical presidential election cycles, is being closely watched as the race has remained within the margin of error in polls and voters are worried about both candidates’ abilities to serve due to their ages.
