Barr used the language of Black Lives Matter even as he sought to blame an increase in violent crime on protests calling for defunding police. “Each year, approximately 7,500 black Americans are the victims of homicide,”Barr praised the anti-crime crackdown of the 1990s as a model before continuing, “Since then we had that terrible event in Minneapolis, but then we had this extreme reaction that has demonized police and called for the defunding of police departments.
“This rise is a direct result of the attack on the police forces and the weakening of police forces,” Barr claimed. Barr offered no evidence of a connection between protests and crime.Part of Barr’s remarks included the announcement of more funding for state and local law enforcement, which he positioned as a symbol of the administration’s commitment to police.
“Linked to this increase in federal law enforcement agents, we are also providing additional financial assistance to the state and local enforcement agencies to permit them to provide more cops, more members of our task force,” . “Our announcement today is a demonstration of our commitment to the men and women who serve as police officers in Chicago, Albuquerque, and Kansas City.”At one point, Barr claimed that the FBI has made 200 arrests in Kansas City within two weeks.
