President Trump is expected to grant a full pardon to former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich as early as Monday, potentially paving the way for his nomination as the US ambassador to Serbia. Blagojevich, who served a shortened sentence after Trump commuted his 14-year prison term for corruption charges in 2020, has maintained his innocence and claims he was targeted by a corrupt FBI.

WASHINGTON — President Trump is expected to pardon former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich as early as Monday — as he considers nominating the disgraced Democrat to be US ambassador to Serbia, The Post has learned.

At trial, the then-governor insisted he merely meant it was a “unique opportunity” to appoint someone, but another recording captured Blagojevich implying he was offered $500,000 — while prosecutors said he wanted as much as $1.5 million. “They feel like they’re a power center in their own right,” he told Rogan of federal law enforcement.

Trump commuted Blagojevich’s sentence during his first term as the 45th president sought re-election, saying the punishment was “ridiculous” and didn’t fit the ex-governor’s crimes.
