WASHINGTON—President Trump expressed optimism Friday for a new trade deal with Japan, but said Japanese tariffs on U.S. farm products must be lifted—and suggested the U.S. could use levies on Japanese cars as leverage.
Seated in the Oval Office with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Mr. Trump said that Japan “puts very massive tariffs on our agriculture.” But he added, “We don’t tariff their cars so I think that something we’ll work out.”
