The Trump administration has loosened measures imposed under the Obama administration that toughened offshore drilling safety standards in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill

WASHINGTON—Offshore oil drillers will have a freer hand in meeting federal safety requirements under new rules being released today by the Interior Department.

The rules will affect the “well-control rule” adopted by the Obama administration in the wake of the deadly 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill. With the revisions, officials say, the safety standards imposed by that rule will be maintained but drillers will have more flexibility in meeting them.
