Tropical Storm Karl continued to gain strength Wednesday afternoon in the Gulf of Mexico. The system poses no immediate threat to the U.S., but will impact Mexico over the next few days, forecasters said.said Karl had maximum sustained winds of 60 mph as of 5 p.m. Wednesday. It was centered about 240 miles north-northeast of the port city of Veracruz and was moving north at 2 mph.
Karl is expected to make a turn toward the southwest and make landfall along the south-central coast of Mexico, perhaps not too far from the city of Veracruz early Saturday, according to. The main impacts in the region will be associated with torrential rain, gusty winds and dangerous surf. Karl grew a little stronger off Mexico’s southern Gulf coast on Wednesday and was expected to approach land by the weekend without gaining hurricane strength.
The hurricane center said Karl could bring up to 12 inches of rain to isolated parts of Veracruz and Tabasco states, potentially leading to flash flooding and mudslides.
