Tropical Cyclone Fani hits the Indian Coast paid UNICEFUSA
Indian authorities evacuated more than a million people from the most vulnerable communities along the low-lying east coast before the storm barreled into Odisha state. Fani has been described as the strongest cyclone to hit the region since a similar system struck Odisha in 1999, resulting in at least 10,000 deaths. On Thursday, May 2, maximum sustained winds reached 155 mph with gusts of up to 190 mph.
The storm is expected to weaken as it moves north-northeast toward Kolkata, one of India's most populous cities, and Bangladesh, where the government is working diligently to move hundreds of thousands of people to higher ground.
