Metin Topuz, a translator and fixer for the US Drug Enforcement Agency at the US consulate in Istanbul, has gone on trial in relation to the 2013 attempted 'judicial coup'
The trial of Metin Topuz, a translator and fixer for the US Drug Enforcement Agency at the US consulate in Istanbul, opened in the city on Tuesday. Topuz is accused of a role in a 2013"judicial coup" against the government.
The trial of Metin Topuz, a translator and fixer for the Drug Enforcement Agency at the consulate, opened in Istanbul nearly a year and a half after his arrest in October 2017. In early February, a court committed Topuz to trial after accepting a 78-page indictment alleging Topuz had "very intense contacts" with police officers who led a 2013 corruption investigation involving top government officials and their families.
They include US support for the YPG/PKK terror group in Syria, and Washington's refusal to extradite Gulen for trial in the wake of the 2016 coup attempt. "During my 25 years of work with the DEA, I have met many police officers and public officials, exchanging numbers and business cards," Topuz said in his trial testimony.
