Tree trimmer killed when pinned underneath fallen palm fronds in Bonita [Breaking]

A 39-year-old man working as a tree trimmer died Monday morning when dead palm fronds fell on him and trapped him about 50 to 60 feet up a tree in Bonita, fire officials said.Firefighters used two 105-foot ladders to rescue the man, Chula Vista fire officials said. A crew on one of the ladders cleared the dead palm fronds, and another crew moved the unconscious man from his harness to the ladder before lowering him to the ground.

Chula Vista fire Capt. Josh Sanders estimated the palm tree’s height at 100 feet and said the tree trimmer was more than 50 feet up the tree. Sanders said it appeared the man was clearing what is known as the dead skirt when the fronds collapsed. Sanders said tree trimmers usually trim from the bottom of the skirt and climb up, but sometimes the top fronds get heavy and fall.
