A fire erupted at a car dealership in Tooele as crews responded to a multi-vehicle crash in the area on Nov. 3, 2023.
The semi slammed into the Tooele Motor Company, causing a massive fire, injuring 11 people, and damaging 33 vehicles. Stapley reportedly told Tooele police that as he was approaching the intersection, he started to hit the brakes but that they didn't feel right. He tried downshifting but the transmission didn't respond, and as a last resort he tried pulling both air buttons on the dash.Police documents state that on the morning of the incident, Stapley said he did a pre-check inspection on his truck and didn't "see anything concerning.
He reportedly delivered loads all day, making around five runs on Main Street before he eventually lost control. Police said they tried to inspect the truck's air brake system, but that it was destroyed in the crash.
