As Victor Wembanyama has France on the verge of an Olympic medal, Tony Parker says he 'has a chance to be one of the best players in the history of our game.'
When the Spurs drafted a slender Parisian teenager named Tony Parker back in 2001, the NBA had little French presence to speak of. Less than two decades later, flipping on a game that doesn't feature at least one French man roaming the court is verging on impossible. Much of the credit for this steady surge in French talent is owed to Parker, the 2023 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee who won four NBA titles alongside Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili .
Grateful for the help, Wembanyama's French homecoming not over yet In a recent interview with Yahoo Sports at the Paris Olympics, Parker spoke proudly of his enormous impact on French basketball culture. 'I feel very proud to inspire a whole generation,' Parker said during an interview with Kerri Walsh Jennings. 'When I arrived there were only two French guys, and I was the first French guy to be an NBA champion, to be an All-Star.
What makes a world champion? Noah Lyles and the Spurs have long agreed 'Victor is amazing,' Parker said. 'His head and his mental side, there’s nothing I can tell him. He’s ready. He’s not bothered by pressure or the expectations. He’s a little bit like LeBron. The only one I can compare who had so much expectation before he arrived is LeBron James. I think he’s the only one you can really compare. And Victor, the way be played his rookie season with the Spurs, he was unbelievable.
