Titanic director James Cameron has responded to rumors that he will be directing a movie inspired by the OceanGate submersible implosion. In June, the Titanic became headline news again when the OceanGate submersible Titan went missing during an expedition to the site of the sunken ship, which was wrecked by striking an iceberg in 1912.

It Makes Sense That James Cameron Won’t Make a Movie About the Titan Submersible While Cameon’s Titanic did bring a major tragedy to life onscreen, the circumstances surrounding the hit movie are much different than they would be with a movie about OceanGate. For one thing, it is likely much too soon to make an OceanGate movie.
There is also the matter that the Titanic tragedy is a historical event that was used as a backdrop for an original story. While many of the details surrounding the other passengers and deadly circumstances presented in the movie are accurate to the Titanic true story, the characters at the center of the movie - lovers Jack and Rose - are fictional inventions, which helped prevent the movie from feeling as exploitative as it could have been.
In addition to any ethical compunctions Cameron might have, the Titanic director also simply does not have time to add another movie to his plate at the moment. The filmmaker is currently in post-production on Avatar 3, which was recently delayed to a 2025 release date. He is likewise deep in the process of bringing Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 to life, a process that will likely take many years.
