Recordings of Tim Curry's Joker voice have been added to a clip from BatmanTAS, and it teases what might have been had the role not ultimately gone to Mark Hamill. Check it out ▶️

Newly surfaced recordings of Tim Curry's dialogue as the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series give a glimpse of the DC Animated Universe before Mark Hamill replaced Curry as the Clown Prince of Crime. Batman: The Animated Series was the inaugural program in the DCAU and won four Emmy Awards during its two season run from 1992 to 1995.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Batman: The Animated Series ran on the Fox Kids network, and was generally kid-friendly, but still drew inspiration from Tim Burton's Batman films and ran with the darker overtones that are now solidified in comic book adaptations. Hamill's performance is remembered as one of the best depictions of the Joker, and that's considerable praise considering both Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix won Oscars for their versions of Gotham's most iconic villain.

Tim Curry Still Had An Impact On The DCAU Curry evidently held no grudge against the Batman: The Animated Series executives who had replaced him with Hamill as he later appeared in two DCAU episodes, though he was only credited for one. His uncredited role was as a robotic clown in an episode of Batman: The Animated Series, perhaps a nod to the fact he was the first person cast Gotham's most hated clown.

The recovered tapes of Curry reveal the slippery, creaky inflections of the Joker's voice that Hamill later replicated. The first actors to play the Joker on-screen, Cesar Romano and Jack Nicholson, delivered iconic performances but were much less committed to the shrill, oscillating tone that Curry and Hamill sprung for in Batman: The Animated Series.
