With the U.S. House of Representatives recently passing legislation that could potentially result in a nationwide TikTok ban, influencers who rely on the app as a source of income could see their livelihoods jeopardized.People like Canadian TikTok influencer Naomi Leanage calls it “a recipe for anxiety,” adding that about 90% of her income comes from TikTok.7 million businesses use the app, according to TikTok.

Hurst traveled to Washington, D.C., on TikTok’s invitation where he spoke to lawmakers before the House voted on the bill.“When we had gotten there on Monday, there were only about I think 12 House members that were going to vote against the bill,” he said. “When they ended up voting, there were over 65 that voted against it once they had heard from us.”If an outright ban of the app were to happen, Leanage has been looking at creating content for other platforms, such as YouTube.

CSAC’s Ratnam echoed those points: Students need time to sit down with their financial aid offers and weigh their options, he said. “Financial aid plays a huge role in their lives.”Ratnam, of CSAC, told LAist he’s “pretty confident” another extension bill will happen. Still, he urged students and families to submit their FAFSA applications as soon as possible.
